One rainy El-Nino day I started to wonder what ever happened to Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor. Below is a synopsis of what I was able to find on the web about Farrell's.

What I remember

I grew up in Southern California. We went to the Farrell's in the Stonewood Shopping Center in Downey. There was also one in Rosemead, and Cerritos.

I remember the player piano, the candy store, the straw hats, the Green River, the menus printed on newspaper, and the ominous drums and sirens that sounded during a birthday fest.

My 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Nelson promised to take everyone who memorized and receited a poem to Farrell's. I don't remember the poem .... geez, maybe it was the preamble or something .... but I remember needing to memorize it so I could go on one of those Farrell's trips.

Slowly, the Farrell's in my surrouding communities started disappearing. I can remember going to Hawaii around 1984 and stumbling across a Farrell's in the local shopping center. That was the last time I ate at a Farrell's. Years later I discovered that there had been one Rosemead that hung around for a long time under a different name, but it folded in the last few years.

Current Locations
There are at least two places currently operating under the Farrell's name. One is in San Diego the other in Portland, Oregon on Pearl St. (it still has Green Rivers on the menu!) I also discovered a place in Portland that had been a Farrell's and now operates as the Orginal Portland Ice Cream Parlor (on Weidler St.)

I searched BigYellow for nationwide Farrell's listings and got the following:

TidBits
A plane crashed into the Farrell's that was near the Torrance Airport

Sometime in the late 70s to early 80s, Farrell's sold their list of Birthdays to a Direct Marketing company who in turn sold it to the Selective Service. The Selective service sent out notices to all the men about to turn 18 reminding them to register for the draft.

Original Owner
The chain was originated by Bob Farrell; at some point it was sold to a bigger multi-restraunt chain and it fizzled from there. Bob is now a motivational speaker and co-author of Give 'em the Pickle.
